About One Song Glory...
"Kevin has a great voice! WOW!"
"Man..... look out world, here comes Kevin Spencer. That boy has one hell of a voice. It's smooth but has
a raw-ness it..... and power."
"Glory went well. Kevin moved comfortably."
About Light My Candle...
"LMC was funny, Krystal and Kevin had very cute chemistry. Kevin did this thing for "I mean, you do.. have
a nice.." where he like... leaned towards her and stroked the table.. it was funny."
"Gooood LMC. It was the funniest 'they say that I have the best ass........' I think I've ever seen. Kevin's
a funny guy."
About Another Day...
"Great. Kevin and Krystal definitely have good chemistry."
About Happy New Year...
"Kevin and Krystal had the CUTEST little kiss-- they didnt' try to be all elaborate and licking each other
and whatever, they just.. kissed.. and I swear this huge collective "Awwww" went over the audience."
"Yeah, that kiss was beyond adorable. Very gentle. Love it. Krystal ran her boot up the outside of his leg
instead of the inside. And Kevin didn't blush and pull his shirt down. Or act all that aroused. But that's okay. Because Kevin
= cool."
About What You Own...
"Kevin was great. REALLY great."
About Goodbye Love...
"Yow. Again, Krystal and Kevin tore it up!!!"
About Your Eyes...
"When I became even more impressed with Kevin. There was a lot of faltering on notes and wobbling and such
throught the show from different people...... just lack of confidence. I don't think they feel like they own the notes yet.
It only happened from Kevin a few times. I wasn't expecting much from YE...... I figured he'd falter on something. Nope. It
was beautiful. He was beautiful. His MI-MIIIIIII went very well. Powerful. His collapse onto Mimi was the most natural movement
he made. This boy can act."
About Kevin In General...
"Incredible performance, Really REALLY nice guy afterwards, fantastic voice."
"Kevin's a great actor."
"Great opening week performance! its good that he's from a band not theater, kinda gives it the more roger
feel. a definite change from jeremy, more cary reminiscent, which could be good or bad i suppose. a strong voice, and an AWESOME
Glory. and he actually pronounces the G on glory. thanks so much for not singing to Lory! =) lots of energy on stage. we think
he wears eyeliner, which is new, but all the costumes are the same. could be wrong, but looked like he was crying during YE
on sat night. very sincere, good chemistry with krystal. his strong point is his vocals. bravo!"
About Kevin and Krystal...
"The two shared a chemistry onstage that was passionate and tender, with Spencer playing to the crowd as an
intense and believable artist striving for glory."
The following is an article from a Savannah Newspaper that was done
over the phone with Kevin.
"Canadian musician Kevin Spencer talks about the
emotional demands of performing in one of Broadway's most popular stories, as well as his amorous connection to Savannah
When Kevin Spencer learned his photo appeared in Rolling Stone due to a performance
at a Lilith Fair concert, the struggling musician was so broke that he had to borrow a few bucks from a neighbor to buy a
copy of the magazine.
Today, his story is a different one.
He's playing the part of a struggling musician on
stage in the touring production of the widely acclaimed rock opera "Rent." Based on Puccini's classic "La Boheme," "Rent"
has a colorful cast that includes a downtrodden musician, an aspiring filmmaker, street performers, homeless people, a lesbian
lawyer, an exotic dancer, a philosophy professor and a transvestite.
On the road with the show for almost two years and having done more than 425
performances around the world, Spencer has put a lot into Roger. At the beginning of the tour, he often struggled with separating
his psyche from Roger's, whose challenges often invaded his dreams.
Today, while that separation is easier, each performance
still takes an emotional toll.
"I become Roger and I go through all of the emotions he is going through in order to
tell the story," he explained. "When I take the journey, it's definitely not a fake thing I spend 40 minutes of the show in
tears."
Not yet knowing he would soon have the chance to play the lead role in the touring production, Spencer saw
the show on Broadway a few years ago -- just a few days before he got the surprise phone call to audition.
"I was pretty blown away. I couldn't believe what I was seeing," he said. "I
like theater, but I'm a real rock 'n' roll fan. A lot of theater is good but it doesn't blow me away. 'Rent' did."
For
Spencer, the play has reminded him of his own immortality. When his tour ends later this year, there's always the chance he
might continue in some capacity with "Rent" in New York or London, or pursue his own music."
"That's what 'Rent' teaches,"
he said. "You don't always have tomorrow. Live for today."
